Worldwide interest in poker has never been higher, with high-stakes tournaments now held in gambling capitals around the world. To underline its current popularity, the first prize in the recent World Series of Poker contest was a staggering US$8.53 million. It was won last week in Las Vegas by US professional player Greg Merson after a marathon, 12-hour game.

The series started back in July with over 7,000 players taking part. Players were eliminated over a series of rounds in the no-limit Texas hold em contest, leaving some of the worlds best players in last weeks final. After playing the winning hand and collecting his prize, Merson said: I feel pretty good V got all the tears out so now I feel relaxed.

The top three players were all from the US, with Las Vegas native Jesse Sylvia finishing second and claiming $5.3 million. Asked how he felt about the 12-hour game, he simply said: That was nuts, man!Arizonas Jake Balsiger, who is only 21, had a good chance of becoming the youngest ever World Series of Poker champion, but he eventually came third, winning $3.8 million.
