(Life) TV Therapy for Stress
People reach out to their friends when they are stressed, but maybe they should start reaching out to grab the remote control instead.
People deal with stress differently. Some opt to talk to their friends, some sweat it out through exercise, and some compensate by eating. But what can be more comforting than watching reruns of your favorite TV show?
Two studies showed that the participants who immersed themselves in watching TV reruns when they felt stressed or fatigued felt happier afterward and performed better at difficult tasks. A researcher remarked, Fictional worlds can be a way of seeking connections to others without having all the strings attached. On a basic level, people cant fully differentiate television from reality so they form emotional bonds with the characters. Watching reruns allows people to fully relax in what they feel is a friendly and familiar environment.
Although television has been getting a bad rap for making people inactive and unsocial, people should not be too quick to rule this out as a tool to relieve stress. The researcher says, Its nothing to feel guilty about V and (it) is actually something that research, so far, suggests can be good.
