(Entertainment) Argo Tops US Box Office

After staying in second place for the past 2 weekends, Argo finally reached number one with total ticket earnings of about US$60.8 million.

The movie plot is loosely based on true events following the Iranian revolution in 1979 when the government was overthrown and more than 50 Americans were taken as hostages. Six embassy officials were able to escape and find a temporary haven at the Canadian embassy, but they knew that it was only a matter of time before they get caught. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative Tony Mendez, played by Ben Affleck, forms a plan to smuggle them out of Iran by disguising the trapped Americans as his Canadian film crew for his fake movie named Argo.

This thriller marks the third time Ben Affleck has worked behind the camera and it has generated much Oscar buzz for his work. Critics loved his portrayal of the tense relations between Iran and the US and that he was able to tell both sides of the story V the serious danger they were in and the ridiculous but successful nature of the ruse. Popular entertainment magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, has already dubbed him one of the best directors of his generation.
