(Education) Foreign Students Queue through the Night in London

London is one of the worlds leading destinations for overseas students, but the government is not making it easy for them to settle in. International students are required by law to register with the police within 7 days of their arrival, but it is becoming apparent that the local officials are not able to handle the large number of students. Even though the office officially opens at 6:30am, students start to queue outside at midnight. When morning comes, only some people at the front of the line are allowed in, while the rest are turned away and have to return later that night to try their luck again. One law student, who had spent the past four days in line with no success, commented, Obviously, this will damage British universities reputation. This isnt the only country that offers international education V the US and Canada do not treat foreign students like this.

Dialogue Example:

(Studying abroad) Mark is Tinas father. Tina is leaving for an English learning course in London and Mark is helping her prepare for her trip. Lets listen to their conversation.

Mark: Are you all packed? Did you remember to bring everything you need?

Tina: Yes. I have my passport, student visa and course registration confirmation letter in my carry-on luggage.

Mark: Maybe I should go and help you settle in. I dont want you to experience culture shock.

Tina: Dad, you worry too much. I am 18 years old. It is even legal for me to drink beer there if I wanted to.

Mark: I hope you wont. Im glad that Aunt Sue agreed to keep an eye on you.

Tina: Im so excited. She is going to bring me to see famous sites like the Big Ben, London Eye and most importantly, Harrods V the most famous department store in London!

Mark: Enjoy yourself but please dont empty out my bank account. And remember you have to go to the local office to register with the police before you can attend your classes.

Tina: Im going to be miserable waiting in line all night long. But at least I can use the time to catch up with Aunt Sue.
