(Culture) Japanese Bento
The Japanese are known for their love of all things kawaii V and their food is no exception!
Bentos are single-serve takeout or home-packed meals. They are often in a box and contain foods such as rice, fish or meat, and pickled or cooked vegetables. They often contain images of cartoon characters, animals, and other cute images, and are either bought in stores or produced at home.
The wordbento comes from a slang term for convenience used in the Soong Dynasty V and while it is true that these lunchboxes are readily available in stores and supermarkets, making them is another matter entirely! It is not uncommon for Japanese mothers to spend between four or five hours on one bento alone and the pressure they face to produce the best bento for their children to take to school can often be overwhelming.
It may seem strange to spend so much time on something that can be consumed in a matter of minutes, but Japanese culture has a long history of art that focuses on the process as much as the outcome. Bentos are considered art, and it is often the act of doing that the artist derives the most pleasure from.
