The US town was made famous by its centuries-old witch trials.

Halloween may be celebrated around the world, but no one takes the day as seriously as the Americans, and if you want a truly scary Halloween vacation you should head to the States. There are haunted houses and hotels all over the US, but surely the most fitting Halloween destination is Salem, Massachusetts, which remains famous for its 17th and 18th century witch trials.

Its believed that 19 people were executed in Salem on the accusation of witchcraft, and the best place to learn more about those events is the Salem Witch Museum. If you want something more festive, the town always comes alive on Halloween with parties, music and dance shows, and events with modern-day witches going on throughout the town.

Walking, trolley car, and Segway tours of the towns scariest places are a regular occurrence throughout the year, and they take you past the spots where people were executed. There are also a number of important graveyards and haunted houses, and for something a little different, you could take a boat for a scary tour of the harbor.
