(Education) New Online University School Talks about Charges

The University of Texas raised the issue of fees, but only for courses that gives students degree credit.

Online universities have become a growing phenomenon in the West, and it seems that contributing universities now want to make some money from their input. The University of Texas (UT) announced recently that it would join the edX program started by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and it said it would charge students for courses that earn them degree credits.

The edX alliance was established this year and soon attracted interest from the University of California, Berkeley. So far, institutions provide courses free of charge, but students do not earn any credits for their work. Thats set to change, though, and UT is happy to be at the forefront of the evolution, and UT spokesperson said: There will be a tuition charge for credit-earning courses, but the amount hasnt been determined.

Although UT is talking about charges, it insists it is only doing so in order to make degree study cheaper for students. Many people in higher education are becoming concerned about the rising costs of tuition and impact of student loans. Online courses would remain cheaper than ones in actual schools, so students should be able to cut their costs.
