(Business)HP Announces Job Cuts
The tech companys profits were better than expected.
Hewlett-Packard announced last week that it will cut 27,000 jobs by the end of 2014. The worlds biggest personal computer maker is going to reduce its workforce by 8%, a move that will save it $3.5 billion a year. According to the company, the decision is one part of a productivity initiative designed to simplify business processes.
The announcement came immediately after the company released its most recent quarterly figures. Although HP outperformed market expectations, the encouraging results were largely overshadowed by the reports of widespread job cuts. The technology giant revealed that its profits fell 31% to US$1.6 billion in the second quarter. Revenue in the three-month period was down 3% on the previous year and stood at $30.7 billion.
Meg Whitman, who was appointed HPs chief executive in September, spoke about the results, commenting: This quarter we exceeded our previously provided outlook and are executing against our strategy, but we still have a lot of work to do. The financial figures and job cut announcement brought a mixed reaction from the market. HPs shares closed the day down 3%, but were up 6.6% in late trading.
