(Culture)Osaka Mayor Hits Out at Tattoos
He said that city workers will not be promoted unless they reveal whether they have had tattoos.
Toru Hashimoto, the mayor of Osaka in Japan, has told the citys workers that they will not get promoted unless they fill out a survey declaring whether or not they have a tattoo. Body art is a sensitive issue in Japan, where it is generally connected to organized crime. This is especially true in Osaka.
Reports suggest Hashimoto made the issue of tattoos a priority after learning earlier this year that a worker at a childrens home threatened kids by showing them his tattoos. He has commented that Citizens feel uneasy or intimidated if they see tattoos on workers in services, and it undermines trust in the city. He has also stated that he would not let Lady Gaga or Johnny Depp work for the city because of their tattoos.
Hashimoto is incredibly popular in Osaka, and most of the citys workers have filled in the tattoo survey. Around 500 have not yet complied with the request, and they could face penalties as a result. As a matter of course, it will never happen that someone is promoted without any problem after ignoring a legitimate order from his or her superior, Hashimoto said last week.
