(International) Chinese Companies Violate Human Rights in Africa
British newspaper, the Guardian, reports the Chinese company that established the National Defense Academy in Harare, the capital city of the African country Zimbabwe, has been accused of human rights violations by the local workers. The report points out that there are around 600 Zimbabwean workers and 300 Chinese workers at the construction site, among which 50 Mainlanders have management roles.
According to the report, Chinese workers have comfortable living quarters, while the local workers live in shacks outside. Some workers complain that they regularly work long hours, with some starting from four in the morning, and some working from seven in the morning until nine in the evening.
The Guardian also lists a series of violations by the Chinese in Africa in the past few years, including the Sudanese government's expropriation of land in order to drill oil for Sudan in 2000; China and Congo signing a commercial agreement that lacked transparency in 2007; the transfer of the ownership of the uranium mines in Niger, which were monopolized by a French company, to China in 2008; and Human Rights Watch disclosing that Chinas copper mine in Zambia violated safety and union laws in 2011, etc.
