(Local) Activists Call for Animal Protection Law

They say that to stamp out cruelty, the public needs to get behind animal protection.

Animal rights campaigners are pushing for a new law to protect animals in China. They say that instances of abuse against animals are increasing, and they claim that such cases include the killing of stray animals and animal performances at zoos. Chang Jiwen, a law professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, says that there is no clear sign of when legislation will be introduced.

A lawyer in Beijing by the name of Cai Chunhong said the reason why this has taken so long is that there is not sufficient public pressure to force lawmakers into acting on this issue. Although awareness of animal welfare is rising thanks to growing pet ownership in recent years, animal lovers are still a minority, she noted.

Public opinion might be starting to change as those who are cruel to animals become more brazen in their activities. There has been an outrage over an Internet group calling themselves cat torturers. Members of the group post images and videos of cats being tortured or killed. They even discussed the possibility of killing over 1,000 cats on Christmas Eve.
