The honeybee population has been declining at a frightening fast pace over the past 10 years, and many scientists have been frantically searching for a reason why.They had previously found a parasite that was infecting and killing off honeybee hives.Now, however, they have found a new parasite, which is a type of fly that lays eggs in the stomachs of the bees and makes them act in strange ways, which some researchers have described as like zombies. The scientists are working on a new cure for the discovered parasite.

(Disappearing Honeybees) Charles and Maria are a couple. They are buying honey at the store and are discussing the reduction in honeybee population. Let's listen to their conversation.

Charles: Wow, honey just keeps getting more and more expensive!

Maria: I know! With so many honeybees dying off, I can imagine it will only get worse.

Charles: Do you really believe it's parasites killing them? Why hasn't this been a problem before

Maria: Honestly, I think parasites are a much smaller problem. Look at the increase in pesticides over the past few decades!

Charles: Yes, true. I wouldn't be surprised if all the poisons and chemicals we put on food plants is really what is hurting the bees.

Maria: Or at least making them weaker, which makes it easier for parasites to attack them.

Charles: I wonder how long it will take to fix the problem

Maria: Well, with all the money being made on commercial farming, I worry that our favorite honey may be impossible to find in a few years.
