(Business) Samsung to Set Up a Factory in China
The plant will give Samsung a way into Chinas huge market.
The Korean government has given Samsung Electronics the go-ahead to build a memory-chip factory in China. The plant will produce components for use in tablet computers, smartphones, and MP3 players. The factory will be important for Samsung, as the company will make Nand flash memory chips there. Analysts believe the Nand chip market will be worth US$29 billion this year.
The decision to allow Samsung to build such a key factory in China was a sensitive one. There have been claims that the firms technological advances could be at risk of spying. The Korean Ministry of Knowledge and Economy said it would help the company keep its operation secure. Analysts also say that because chip manufacture is a multi-billion-dollar industry, its not easy to steal and copy chip design.
The analysis firm Gartner said that China will be responsible for 55% of global chip sales by 2015. And Tim Charlton of Charlton Media Group says that the country is the biggest maker and buyer of electronic goods. When you put those two elements together, he said, Samsung realizes that it should be manufacturing its chips as close to the final consumer as possible.
