(Culture) South Africa Takes Lead in Promoting Gay Rights
While there are plenty of gay bars in Cape Town, homosexual acts can cost you your freedom or even your life in other countries nearby.
Unlike most African countries, South Africa is protective of sexual minorities. It not only has a law banning discrimination on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation and gender, there is even a gay village in the countrys capital Cape Town. Here, no one is in hiding and many gay bars can be found.
Unfortunately, Cape Towns gay village doesnt, wouldnt and couldnt exist in any other country on the continent. Out of the 55 countries in Africa, 36 forbid homosexuality and four have the death penalty for homosexuality. With penalties for homosexual acts on the rise, gay people and other sexual minorities are forced into lives of secrecy and fear.
It is said that South Africa is different because it had to overcome discrimination to become a democracy. Perhaps the country can play a role in countering the anti-gay movement in Africa by showing there is an alternative to repression.
