(International) Bangladeshs Election Day Violence Kills 24

Bangladeshs ruling party has refused talks with the opposition after its election resulted in the death of 24 people and numerous cases of bloodshed, boycotts and violence.

The Awami League had a sweeping victory after the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and 20 other opposition parties refused to take part in the election, but newspapers described the win as a hollow victory which gives it neither a mandate nor an ethical standing to govern effectively. Although the party won an approximate 80 percent of the 300 parliamentary seats, there is little cause for celebration in a country that had hundreds of its polling stations torched and police firebombed in what has been described as the bloodiest election in Bangladeshi history.

The ruling Awami League has vowed to eliminate militancy in a country many see as heading towards disaster. A recent general strike and the partys decision to refuse early dialogue with the BNP to agree on a framework for a new vote indicate signs of struggle.

The BNP blames the government for the violence, as they refused demands for the election to be organized by a neutral caretaker administration. BNP vice president Shamsher Chowdhury stated, This government must declare this election null and void and we need a new election organized by a non party-government.
