(Education) Native Languages to Be Included in National Curriculum
In a bid to keep Taiwans native languages alive, the Ministry of Education has made it compulsory for students to learn native languages.
Beginning in 2016, both elementary and junior high school students will have to study a native language at school. Students will have one native language class a week, for which they can choose to learn either Taiwanese, Hakka or an aboriginal language. Under the current program, native languages are an optional course in junior high school. They are usually conducted by teachers in the form of an extracurricular social club.
The news has received positive responses from most parent groups and teachers organizations. National Alliance of Parents Organization head Wu Fu-bin has expressed his support, saying, The government has the responsibility to promote and implement native language education. Similarly, Union of Education in Taiwan chairperson Cheng Cheng-yu also says the changes are necessary for developing a genuine Taiwan native language education program.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the Alliance for Taiwanese Mother Tongue Chang Chia-yen has requested the implementation of complementary assessments, such as a review of the certification process for teachers of native languages, and addressed the need to develop new textbooks for students.
