(Travel) The Worlds Must-Eat Foods
A culinary tour of England, China, and Mexico
They say you are what you eat, and certainly cultures are defined, at least in part, by their cuisines. To visit and experience a culture properly, you have to try the local dishes, and around the world, the must-eat foods are very different. In England, where traditional foods are known to be laden with carbohydrates and fat, a meat and potato pie with a portion of deep-fried chips (thick-cut fries) has to be consumed to be believed.
Crispy Peking Duck is now famous around the world, and incredibly, the very first restaurant to specialize in the dish is still running after almost 600 years. The restaurant spends several days working with each duck to make sure the skin is extremely crispy. Beijing has a lot of these restaurants now, though, and the largest is 7 stories high and can serve 5,000 dishes a day.
Finally in Mexico, the national dish is actually a sauce called mole. The rich, brown paste is usually served over chicken, and it will generally consist of at least 20 ingredients V sometimes, there are many more. Apparently the dish was created when a group of poor nuns had to cook for an archbishop. The ladies mixed together chilies, chocolate, nuts, bread, and whatever else they could find. The archbishop loved it, and Mexican have been eating it ever since.
