(Education) Is Technology Really Helping Students

A new report suggests students have not been helped by investments in technology.

Schools around the world have been investing in modern technology in recent years. There is a belief that students will learn more and be more motivated if their studies involve time spent looking at screens rather than books. However, a new US study conducted by the Center for American Progress has found that an investment in tablets and digital whiteboards has done little to alter educational practices in the country.

Ulrich Boser, who wrote the report, said that schools frequently acquire digital devices without discrete learning goals and ultimately use these devices in ways that fail to adequately serve students, schools, or taxpayers. The study also found that no one had collected any evidence to show that investment in technology had improved student performance.

Experts in digital learning say that technology can improve academic performance as long as it is used properly. John Pane, who works at the RAND Corporation, noted that good, digitally led learning approaches allow students to learn more independently and at their own speed, which means that teachers can spend more time addressing students individual needs.
