(Technology) Killswitch Proposed to Tackle Smartphone Theft

The theft of smartphones is becoming a huge problem in many parts of the world, and lawmakers want manufacturers to do more to combat it.

Smartphones have been the worlds hottest gadgets for a long time. The gadgets popularity leads to long lines of customers outside retail outlets when a new device is launched, and also to a growing number of smartphone thefts. In the US, the issue is becoming particularly serious, with half of all robberies in San Francisco in 2012 involving a mobile device. In some cases, the victims of theft have been killed by their attackers.

To combat the growing problem, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon have launched the Secure Our Smartphones initiative. The plan calls for smartphone manufacturers to make their devices less attractive to criminals, and one suggested solution is the installation of a killswitch that would completely deactivate stolen phones.

Before meeting with the countrys top smartphone manufacturers last week, Schneiderman said: Smartphone makers need to make every stolen phone a paperweight, meaning that they should be unworkable after being reported as stolen. Arguing that devices released next year should be fitted with this feature, he added: This problem is solvable within a year.
