(Business) World Bank Revises China Growth Forecast
Predictions for global growth have also been cut.
The World Bank has cut its prediction for growth in the Chinese economy. The financial body stated last week that it now expects growth of 7.7% this year, down from the previous forecast of 8.4%. It said the reasons for the revision were poor global conditions V the prediction for international growth was cut from 2.4% to 2.2% V and the effects of Chinas attempts to restructure its economy.
Chinese economic growth has been driven for years by exports, but with global demand now falling, the national government is trying to boost internal demand. Experts at the World Bank have said that attempts to alter the course of Chinas economy will cause a short-term reduction in growth.
Speaking about global economic concerns, World Bank chief economist Kaushik Basu said: While there are markers of hope in the financial sector, the slowdown in the real economy is turning out to be unusually protracted. This is reflected in the stubbornly high unemployment in industrialized nations, with unemployment in the eurozone actually rising, and in the slowing growth in emerging economies.
