The economy expanded by 0.9% in the first three months of the year.

The growth rate of South Koreas economy in the first three months of the year was the highest it has been in two years. Figures show that the economy expanded by 0.9% in the first quarter. Although a relatively modest figure, analysts had been expecting worse, and the government itself had previously cut growth forecasts for 2013 on the belief that exports were slowing.

Around half of South Korean output is exported, and demand has been hit in recent years by the fact that economies in Europe and the US are struggling. Although exports grew by 3.2% from the final quarter of 2012, analysts are still warning that there could be trouble ahead for the countrys manufacturers.

Since last year, the South Korean won has risen 10% against the US dollar, which means its exports are effectively more expensive in the key market. In addition, the Japanese yen is weakening, which means that rival products from Japan are becoming cheaper. In good news for the economy, however, the government recently announced a 17.3 trillion won stimulus package.
