When the Spanish giants were kept apart in the semifinal draw, it was expected that they would contest the final in May. The surprising thing about last weeks results wasnt that the teams lost, but the margins of the defeats: Bayern Munich 4, Barcelona 0; Borussia Dortmund 4, Real Madrid 1.

In addition to the thumping victories was the way in which the German teams won. Both Dortmund and Bayern played with flair, precision, and intelligence, and the victories have got many people saying that the balance of power in European soccer may be shifting from Spain to Germany.

It might be too early to say with certainty that the Champions League final will be an all-German affair, as there will be second legs in Spain this week. In front of their fans at the Camp Nou and Bernabeu, Barcelona and Real Madrid will go all out for the win. But even with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo pushing them forward, itll be hard for either team to make it to the final.
