(Business) Dreamliner Battery Investigation could Take Weeks

The prolonged investigations will hurt Boeings reputation and finances.

The US body responsible for investigating the battery used in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner said it could take weeks to finish tests. One of the batteries caught fire during a flight in January and another had a problem which forced a plane to make an emergency landing. Despite this, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says the batteries may not be dangerous.

NTSB chief Deborah Hersman commented that any new technology, any new design, there are going to be some inherent risks. The important thing is to mitigate them. She went on to say that the board was probably weeks away from being able to tell people heres what exactly happened and what needs to change.

Aviation authorities in Japan have already ruled that there is nothing wrong with the battery, but that probably means the planes will remain grounded for longer, as investigators will want to know exactly what went wrong on the flights. This is bad news for Boeing, which has already suffered a series of problems with the revolutionary airliner. Airlines who have bought the planes may try to get financial compensation from the American plane maker.
