(Culture) Parisian Women Allowed to Wear Pants
An old law banning women from putting on the clothing has been abandoned.
Women in Paris are now legally allowed to wear pants whenever they want for the first time in over 200 years. In November, 1800, a law was introduced that meant women needed to gain the consent of the police if they wanted to wear pants and dress like a man. The regulation was repealed recently, though, with French Minister of Womens Rights Najat Vallaud-Belkacem saying that it went against modern beliefs and practices.
Vallaud-Belkacem claimed that the outdated law was designed to hold women back. This order was aimed first of all at limiting the access of women to certain offices or occupations by preventing them from dressing in the manner of men, the minister said, undoubtedly pleased that the law had been abandoned.
The law was changed slightly in 1892 and then again in 1909, allowing women to put on pants if theyre holding a bicycle handlebar or the reins of a horse. The law has been ignored for years, but it was still felt that because of its sexist nature, it had no place in the countrys law books.
