Lured by the promise of holiday sales and big savings, many Chinese tourists are now forgoing shopping havens like Hong Kong and Macau for the big city lights in Europe and the US. The number of tourists joining shopping tours this holiday season has jumped 20 percent from last year. Ease in obtaining visas and low exchange rates have allowed a larger number of Chinese to travel to Western countries and get better deals on European luxury items and US fashion brands. There is also a rise in the number of people booking trips to sunny locales like Maldives and Sabah. One tourist says, I want to enjoy the sunshine and beaches there, rather than the white Christmas in Beijing.
