(International) Seoul Claims North Korea has 10,000 Kilometer Rocket

Scientists in the South have been analyzing parts of the rocket launched by Pyongyang earlier this month.

South Korea has warned that its northern neighbor is now capable of firing a rocket around 10,000 kilometers. The distance is significant, as it puts the Western United States within range. North Korea launched one of its Unha-3 rockets on December 12, and Seoul has managed to recover parts of the debris. South Korean scientists are now examining the parts to find out more about the rockets capabilities.

A South Korean defense ministry official described the rocket as unsophisticated, commenting that some of the parts would not be used by nations with advanced expertise in space technology. He also said that the welding was crude V done manually. To successfully deliver a weapon, North Korea would need re-entry technology, and South Korea said it would not know its neighbors capabilities in this regard until it had analyzed other parts of the rocket.

Pyongyang has said that the rocket launch, which was done in defiance of UN sanctions, was part of its civilian space program and should not be regarded as a threat to other nations. Western nations, along with many of its neighbors, do not believe this and some have claimed that North Koreas ultimate goal is the development of a long-range nuclear warhead.
