The vegetables were used to simulate passengers during tests.

Engineers working for the Boeing airplane manufacturer are using potatoes to help them develop better inflight wi-fi systems. Sacks of the vegetables are loaded onto planes in place of passengers when the workers are conducting experiments. The composition and high water content of potatoes mean that they affect wi-fi signals in the same way as people, but since they can sit still for longer, theyre much better for the long hours of research.

Boeings Adam Tischler spoke to reporters about the Synthetic Personnel Using Dialectic Substitution, or SPUDS, program V the name is a bit of a joke because spuds is a slang name for potatoes. Its a testament to the ingenuity of these engineers, he said, adding that the vegetables were bought after one of the team read an article on the way vegetables transmit electric force.

The work started in 2006 and has helped the company develop wi-fi system that offers stable and strong signals throughout their aircraft. The signal has also been adapted to ensure that the planes instruments arent affected. Its good news for the thousands of flyers who like to access the Internet on long flights.
