The scientists have found a way to get cancer-killing viruses straight into a tumor.

A team of researchers from Englands university of Sheffield have had a huge breakthrough in their development of a new cancer treatment. Mice injected with a Trojan horse treatment completely recovered from prostate cancer. The process involves putting cancer-killing viruses inside the immune system and getting them inside the tumor where they destroy the cancer.

The team, led by Professor Claire Lewis, took the part of the immune system that attacks alien cells and cloaked it with a virus that avoids being detected. The treatment is administered after a round of chemotherapy or radiotherapy has weakened the body. At this time, a tide of white blood cells naturally floods the affected area to repair it. Were surfing that wave, Lewis said, to get as many white blood cells to deliver tumor-busting viruses into the heart of a tumor.

Reaction to the research has been positive, but experts have stressed that tests on humans need to be done before any definite conclusions can be drawn. Lewis noted that throughout history there have been several breakthroughs with mice that havent worked with humans. She added that human trials are scheduled for next year.
