(Business) Greeces Problems are Worsening
The countrys new budget proposals show that the economy is expected to contract by 4.5% next year.
Greece last week released a budget proposal for 2013, which revealed that the countrys debt problems are even worse than had been thought. Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras revealed that the economy is now expected to contract by 4.5% next year, up from earlier estimates of 3.8%. As a result, national debt is expected to reach 189% of Greeces economic output.
Stournaras last Wednesday had a conference call with representatives from the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank, and Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers. They were talking about proposed budget cuts, labor reforms, and the privatization of state assets. Greece needs the other bodies to agree to its proposals if it is to receive a new package of bailout funds.
The talks were described as being inconclusive, and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said: There is progress in the talks but there is still a lot of work to do. Time is tight. It is hoped that everyone can agree on a deal soon, as Stournaras has revealed that the country will run out of money next month unless it receives more money.
