It appears that China is about to punish gun crimes more severely. On Monday, the deputy minister of public security, Huang Ming, said police must stand up to gun criminals. He said that police forces in different regions and different divisions should work together on this matter.

Huang said officers need to stop the levels of gun crime from rising. He called on local forces to focus on major cases. He argued that it was necessary to uncover the sources of these crimes. Huang also wanted police officers to break illegal gun trading routes.

The Supreme Peoples Court, the Supreme Peoples Procuratorate and the Ministry of Public Security joined together to release a statement on gun crime. The bodies said that criminals who have used guns should take themselves to the nearest police station. If they go to the police before May 31, the notice said, they would receive lesser punishments.
