The luxury carmaker is calling in around 1.3 million cars with a potential battery problem.

BMW has taken the decision to recall around 1.3 million vehicles from around the world. The German manufacturer says that the cars may have a battery problem which could, in worst-case scenarios, cause a fire. The affected vehicles are 5 and 6 series models built between 2003 and 2010. According to BMW, there have been nine reported faults with the vehicles, none of which have led to injury.

BMW has said it will be writing to owners of all the affected cars to advise them to take their vehicles to their nearest authorized dealer. According to the automobile manufacturer, the checks and any resulting repairs will cost nothing and should take only 30 minutes to complete. The potential problem would come as a result of the battery cable cover being improperly fitted.

It is not yet clear how much this recall will affect BMWs bottom line. The company has been performing very well recently, and a few weeks ago it reported excellent figures for the previous year. In 2011, car sales rose by 14% and profits jumped 51% to US$6.43 billion.
