An Islamic group is waging war on the countrys government.

In Nigeria, Islamic insurgents waging war on the government have found a new target: schools. In recent weeks, many schools in the northern reaches of the country have been burnt down at nighttime or attacked with crude, home-made bombs. The government has so far done little to respond, and there are no signs either that it plans to rebuild the destroyed buildings.

The group responsible for the damage is Boko Harem, a radical Islamic group whose name V Boko means book and Harem means forbidden V indicates a lack of tolerance towards education. A spokesman for the group has claimed that the attacks are retaliation for what he described as a government campaign against Islamic schools. The countrys officials, however, have denied the existence of any such campaign.

Boko Harems targeting of schools has not gone down well with the local people. A teacher from the region said: I cant even explain thisK How can somebody destroy a school where children come to learn? And a parent complained that his children are now forced to remain at home, which will mean they have a bleak future ahead of them. It seems likely that the entire region faces a bleak future.
