He wants people who visit Islamic extremist websites to be locked up.

In the wake of Frances al-Qaeda-inspired shootings, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has decided to take a tough stance on Islamic extremism. Sarkozy, who will compete in the first round of the nations presidential elections next month, says he will ban certain imams from entering France. Many Muslim preachers had been expected to travel to France in April for an Islamic conference.

Sarkozy singled out Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi, saying that he was not welcome on the territory of the French republic. Qaradawi was born in Egypt but is now based in Qatar, and he is one of the worlds leading Sunni Muslim clerics. Ahmed Jaballah, the president of the Union of French Islamic Organizations, criticized Sarkozys stance, describing Qaradawi as a great, learned Muslim known for his moderation and balance.

The French president also wants to see people who repeatedly visit Islamic extremist websites to be jailed. He wants the same punishment to be handed to those who travel overseas for terrorist training. Sarkozy tried to call an emergency session of parliament to push through the measures, but he was blocked by the opposition Socialist Party.
