A 1961 piece went under the hammer for US$43 million.

Roy Lichtenstein is one of the biggest names in the world pop art, and last Tuesday, a new record high price was set for one of his works.The piece, entitled I Can See the Whole Room! ... and There's Nobody in It!, was sold for US$43 million in a Christie's auction of post-war and contemporary art in New York.

The work, which uses graphite and oil, was inspired by classic comic book art and was created by Lichtenstein in 1961.The piece measures four square feet and it depicts a man looking through a peep hole and uttering the titular words.Lichtenstein, who died in 1997, was a highly influential member of the pop art movement.His work is becoming increasingly popular, and last year, another of his pieces, OhhhK AlrightK, was sold for $42 million.

Andy Warhol was also an important figure in the movement, and his iconic Four Campbells Soup Cans went for $9.8 million at the same auction.The work of another artist, Louise Bourgeois, also reached record-setting heights at the auction. Her 1996 bronze spider sold for $10.7 million.
