Blink"
(Technology) Blink Bought By Yahoo
Blink, a mobile application that allows users to send self-destructing messages, has been bought by Yahoo. Blink users can send texts, photos and videos that can only be viewed within a certain time frame before they are deleted, making them popular with people concerned with privacy.
The move has been seen as another example of Yahoo trying to poach talent behind smaller upcoming companies in a bid to ensure its future success, in this case Kevin Stephens and Michelle Norgan, former Google employees who created the start-up Meh Labs that created Blink. Terms of the deal, however, have not been disclosed.
Since Yahoos chief executive Marissa Mayer took over two years ago, Yahoo has bought an estimated 40 start-ups in an attempt to increase its market presence and value.
According to Blinks website, they look forward to the possibilities that will come from bringing the Blink vision to Yahoo, and ...built Blink because we believe everyone should be free to show the same honesty and spontaneity in their online conversations as they can in person.
Online messaging apps have become big business in the competitive smartphone and tablet market, with Japanese firm Rakuten recently buying Viber for US$900 million dollars, and Facebook recently purchasing Whatsapp for US$19 billion. Facebook is also reported as having offered Snapchat a multi-billion dollar buyout.
