(Health) Diabetics, Kidney Patients Face Dilemma over Breakfast Foods
While the importance of a healthy breakfast cannot be stressed enough, it is often a tricky problem for people with diabetes and kidney disease.
According to a recent study by the Taiwan Society of Nephrology, 80 percent of those with both diabetes and kidney disease cannot keep the diseases under control. This is mostly due to their inability to take into consideration various diet restrictions, including low protein and potassium and limited sodium and phosphorus, especially when eating out.
It is said that breakfast is the meal with which diabetics and kidney disease patients are most likely to go overboard on. Foods like congee, clay oven rolls and fried breads sticks are not recommended for they all have a high glycemic index, meaning overconsumption can lead blood sugar levels to surge. On the other hand, although oatmeal and salad can help regulate blood sugar, they also increase the risk of developing complications for those with moderate and severe kidney disease.
It has been advised that those with diabetic nephropathy control their food intake by sticking to four principles: food with low protein, low glycemic index, dietary fiber and an appropriate amount of unsaturated fat.
