(Politics) PHL Sanctions Lifted In Taiwan
Philippines sanctions have been lifted three months after the May 9th maritime encounter that led to the death of a local Taiwanese fisherman.
David Lin, Taiwanese foreign affairs minister, met with Amadeo Perez Jr., the Manila Economic and Cultural Office Chairman, on Thursday and announced the decision shortly thereafter, and the GMA News online confirmed the lifting of the sanctions by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Manila via a text from political director Andrew Lin.
Perez traveled to visit the family of Mr. Hung, and stated, May I respectfully present our official letter of apology to the family of Mr. Hung on behalf of our president and our people, after which he shook the hand of Hungs widow and presented her with a letter.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila has recommended eight Coast Guard personnel face homicide charges, as well as sanctions against four others for allegedly tampering with evidence.
According to Batanes-based fishermen, Taiwanese fisherman have become more aggressive and daring in their incursions into Philippine fishing waters since the May 9th incident, increasing in numbers and assertive behavior, but the Philippine Coast Guard does not have enough vessels to go after poachers in the area and incursions are not reported.
