(Technology) Facebook Is Losing Popularity to Twitter

It was not so long ago that Facebook took the world by storm with over 1 billion users. To many teenagers, the social media website has been an addictive drug that has taken over their lives. However, this obsession may be fading away. A new study by the Pew Research Center shows that many teenagers are now turning to sites like Twitter and Instagram for their online sharing. They complained of the drama, excessive sharing and the number of adults on Facebook. Although the site still remains the most commonly used social media service among teenagers, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of Twitter users. The study authors commented that the stress of needing to manage their reputation on Facebook has led the site to become a social burden rather than an exciting new platform that teens can claim as their own.

Dialogue Example:

(Facebook) Wendy and Cindy are friends. Wendy has just run into Cindy on the street. Lets listen to their conversation.

Wendy: Hey Cindy! How have you been? Its been ages since I last saw you.

Cindy: Hey Wendy! Yes, Ive been really busy with school and my part-time job.

Wendy: Is that why your Facebook page has been so quiet lately?

Cindy: Thats part of the reason. I guess I just got tired of updating it and checking peoples updates every day. It feels like a responsibility rather than an enjoyment.

Wendy: I know what you mean. And with your parents, aunts and uncles, and even grandparents, following your every move, you have to be careful with what you post and say all the time.

Cindy: Exactly, which is why Ive been doing my online sharing from my Twitter account instead. Theres a lot less pressure.

Wendy: Really? Then maybe I should open a Twitter account, too.

Cindy: Go for it! Here, this is my account. Remember to add me!
