(International) Coca-Cola Opens Factory in Burma

The company now operates in every country apart from North Korea and Cuba.

For the first time in 60 years, Coca-Cola has a factory in Burma. The soft drinks maker is one of the first US companies to invest in the Southeast Asian nation since the US government decided to relax economic sanctions recently. The firm, which is one of the worlds best known, has said it will invest US$200 million in the country.

Between 1962 and 2011, Burma was governed by a military junta that aggressively stamped out opposition. As a result, the US imposed sanctions, but they were lifted recently after the ruling powers made a series of political and economic reforms. Many large companies are interested in investing, as they believe the country has the potential for rapid economic growth.

Coca-Cola has opened its factory near the capital of Rangoon, and it says it will directly create 2,500 jobs in the country over the next five years. In time, said Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent, we expect to create more than 20,000 job opportunities, directly and indirectly, in this great nation.
