(Local) International Fashion Chains Thrive in Hong Kong

With luxury brands falling out of favor with Chinese tourists due to the government crackdown on lavish spending, Hong Kong has quickly turned into a bargain hunters haven.

Hong Kong has become a must-be location for lower-end retailers that are willing to fork out lofty rentals. It is reported that an increasing number of Chinese tourists are now flocking to Hong Kong to pick up bargains at suburban outlet shopping malls and international fashion chains such as Uniqlo and Zara.

According to property consultancy CBRE, the growing number of bargain-seeking Chinese tourists attracted 51 international brands to set up their first Asia Pacific stores in Hong Kong last year, about twice as many as in Singapore and Tokyo. It is also expected that more big brands will open stores in Hong Kong in the near future.

How Chinese tourists shop is no doubt big business as China is not only the fastest growing market, but is poised to be the worlds biggest in the next three years. And for those foreign retailers that have been eyeing the lucrative market, Hong Kong is their perfect gateway.
