(Business) Taiwans Exports Shrink Unexpectedly
Taiwans economic growth has been hit by the weak global demand for the islands high-tech products.
According to the local government, orders for Taiwans exports in April fell 1.9 percent from a year earlier to $25.1 billion owing to the fragile global economy. The islands GDP growth stood at a mere 1.54 percent year-on-year, falling well short of expectations of 3.26 percent.
Shipments to China, Taiwans biggest export market, saw a 2.9 percent year-on-year decline to $6.6 billion, while sales to Europe tumbled 19.3 percent to $2.26 billion. In particular, information technology items and telecom products took the hardest hit, with sales falling 12 percent from a year earlier to $1.31 billion and sales of mobile phones plunging 28.8 percent.
Commenting on the figures, the Finance Ministry said that exports in 2013 would no doubt be challenging and that year-on-year export growth in the next quarter could be even lower.
