(International) Hard to Assess Threat levels

Teenagers and Social Media are amongst some of the new areas that security personnel are finding hard to assess, but they are definitely coming under observation.

Recently, a teenager named Cameron Dambrosio, a Mass. high school student in the US, was arrested after posting an online video. The video showed the teen rapping an original song that mentioned the Boston Marathon bombing and the White House, which police say contained disturbing verbiage.

With bail set at $1 billion US dollars, the teen is charged with communicating terrorist threats (a state felony) and faces a 20 year jail sentence.

The younger generation, and their use of social media, have become a focus for law enforcement agencies for several reasons. One is that young people are often vulnerable to radicalization. Another is that there seems to be a more accepting trend amongst the public for monitoring and surveillance use in preventing attacks that offsets the potential governmental overreach.

According to Rob DOvidio, a criminal justice professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, When I was young, calling a bomb threat to your high school because you didnt want to go to school that day was treated with a slap on the wrist. Try that nowadays and youre going to prison, no question about it. They are taking it more seriously now.
