"四川遭地震重創"

6.6級的地震在週末來襲。

A 6.6 magnitude quake struck over the weekend.

At 8.02am on Saturday morning, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Baoxing County in Chinas Sichuan province. As of Monday morning, state media were reporting that 207 people were either dead or missing. Another 11,500 were injured, and of those, 960 were in a serious condition. It was not immediately known how much damage the quake had caused, but reports suggested that a number of villages have been flattened.

By Monday morning, rescue teams had reached some of the most remote areas affected by the earthquake. Their job has been made more difficult by the fact that many roads have been destroyed and the 1,300-plus aftershocks that have hit the region since the main quake.

The governments reaction to the disaster has been swift, and over the weekend, Premier Li Keqiang traveled to the city of Yaan, which is near the epicenter, to manage the rescue and aid work. He told reporters that the most important task was to save lives. Other countries in the region also reacted quickly, offering help. Beijing has said that it does not at present need help, but will let other countries know if the situation changes.
