(Life) Oldest Person Celebrates 116th Birthday

The Japanese man received birthday messages from around the world.

Last week, the worlds oldest living person, Jiroemon Kimura of Kyotango in western Japan, celebrated his 116th birthday. He received birthday greetings from around the world, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent the man a special video message. Kimura became the oldest person in December last year, when Dina Manfredini of Iowa in the United States died. Dina was only a few weeks older than Kimura.

In his message, Abe said: I truly congratulate you on your 116th birthday. Im 58 years old, still a young man at only half your age. Thanks to your generations efforts, Japan could overcome several difficult times and achieve the prosperity we enjoy today. Your healthy existence becomes our confidence and pride.

Japanese media sources reported that Kimura lives with his 60-year-old granddaughter-in-law. Every day, he eats three meals of rice, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes. It is perhaps simple diets like this that has meant Japanese people enjoy some of the longest lives of anyone in the world. Figures show that as of 2011, there were over 50,000 people aged over 100 living in the country.
