(International) North Korea Says Its Population Wants to Fight
Tensions are rising in the region, and there is no sign that the North will back down.
As the situation on the Korean peninsula deteriorates at an alarming pace, North Korean state media recently released an inflammatory report claiming that many in the country are keen to join the army and take up the fight against the US. According to the report, they are angered by the fresh United Nations sanctions imposed against the communist state.
The report in the Rodong Sinmun, the ruling Workers Partys official newspaper, states: All people who can take rifle are petitioning to be allowed to join or rejoin the Peoples Army in all provinces and towns. There are even quotes from an 80-year-old former soldier who says he wants to fight again. Send me to the trench. Give me a rifle. I want to rain bullets on the enemy to my hearts content, he is quoted as saying.
The state of affairs between North and South Korea got worse recently when Pyongyang declared that it was scrapping the peace agreement that ended the Korean War. When Seoul called a special military hotline set up between the two nations, officials in the North refused to answer. South Korean authorities are concerned that their neighbors might launch a military attack.
