(Travel) Find Another Side of Africa in Zambia
The countrys northern regions have some amazing sights.
For most people, holidays in sub-Saharan Africa mean going on safari and taking photos of elephants, lions, and zebra, but in Zambias remote north, you can see another kind of beauty: ancient rock paintings. The Mwela rock paintings are a series of around 1,000 separate pictures over a massive, 100 kilometer squared area that speak of life in central Africa 2,000 years ago.
The base for a rock painting trip is the town of Kasama, an old colonial settlement of wide, tree-lined streets and beautiful houses. Youll be able to hire a guide in the town to show you a collection of the pictures, which include fertility images, sketches of animals roaming the plains, and amazing patterns of squares, circles, triangles, and other shapes.
About 150km south of Kasama is the wonderful Shiwa Ngandu estate. It was built around 100 years ago by English aristocrat Sir Stewart Gore-Brown as a little piece of England in the middle of Africa. As well as a large, central house, there are farm buildings and workershouses. Guided tours and even overnight stays are possible.
