James Patterson says fathers play a crucial role in encouraging their children to read.

A bestselling US author has called on fathers to read more. James Patterson, who writes for both children and adults, joined with Prince Charless wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, to launch a reading campaign in the UK recently. If I can help dads to understand their role in making books and reading more important in childrens lives, he said, Ill be a happy man.

Patterson is best known for his detective novels featuring the character Alex Cross, but hes also an accomplished childrens writer. He explained that he began writing childrens books in 2005 in an attempt to get his son interested in reading. His Maximum Ride and Daniel X series of books have topped the bestseller charts in both the UK and the US.

Speaking at the event in London, he said: I believe that dads have a huge role to play in encouraging their children to read. He added: This is not about reading Charles Dickens or Shakespeare, but learning to read with confidence V if you can do that you can make your way through school, college and work.
