(Education) UK Agencies Call for Internet Safety Lessons for Small Children
The NSPCC says that kids as young as five need instruction as internet abuse is a growing problem.
A number of UK child agencies are saying that children as young as five need to be given lessons on how to safely use the internet. They say that children are increasingly exposed to pornography online and many have been coerced into sending indecent images of themselves to other people.
Claire Lilley, a representative of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), said: Young people tell us they are experiencing all sorts of new forms of abuse on a scale never before seen. Other groups have pointed out that many teens regard sexting as normal, and others are highlighting the growing problem of cyberbullying, which is often sexual in nature.
Lilley noted that the internet and mobile phones are now part and parcel of young peoples everyday livesK. The benefits are huge, both socially and educationally, but so too are the dangers. The NSPCC says that parents are often not as technologically astute as their children and find it difficult to stay up to date with all the issues involved. As a result, it wants schools to be responsible for giving internet safety lessons.
