(Local) Bus Crash Caused by Overcrowding and Bad Driving
A series of fatal bus crashes has caused many to call for better safety standards.
Government investigators looking into a fatal bus crash in Gansu Province said that overcrowding and bad driving were behind the accident. As of Sunday night, 18 people had died and another 32 were receiving medical attention after the bus fell into a ravine and caught fire. There were 54 people on the 47 passenger vehicle, but it had not been stopped by safety officials on its 1,000-kilometer journey.
Most of the people on the bus were migrant farmers and their families traveling home for Spring Festival. In China, the Lunar New Year prompts the biggest annual human migration anywhere on the planet, and 3.41 billion trips are expected to be made this year. Several road accidents have already taken place, leading many people to urge officials to enforce safety standards.
The countrys migrant workers often use unlicensed vehicles for trips across the country, and one of the passengers injured in the Gansu crash spoke of the problems that such transportation create. The bus did not receive any safety inspections on the long trip, he said, even though it had run on some expressway sections.
