Ahmadinejad also said he would auction himself for the good of his countrys space program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that he would like to become his countrys first astronaut. INRA, the state news agency reported that the president said: Im ready to be the first Iranian to be sacrificed by the scientists of my country and go into space, even though I know there are a lot of candidates. He also said he would auction himself and donate the proceeds to the space program.

Iran has said it aims to put someone into space by 2020 and a man on the moon five years later. The country recently claimed that it had successfully put a monkey into space and brought it back alive. International observers doubted the validity of the claim, arguing that photos before and after the mission show a different animal.

The nations space program has suffered since the UN Security Council banned other countries and organizations from selling space technology to Iran in 2007. Several world powers have expressed concern that tests of rockets could be used to develop technology for nuclear warheads. Iran has always denied this allegation, however.
